The Importance of being a Diverse Nurse

Diverse cultures, diverse lives, learning and succeeding together. Retrieved November 29, 2008 from https://secure.lynbrook.k12.ny.us/mtorres1/

In our society today there is a lot of diversity around us. This means that there are many different cultures and beliefs that a nurse may not know about. It is important for nurses to educate themselves on other cultures because it will benefit them in communicating with the nurse. There might be a patient that doesn’t speak english and therefore can’t communicate about what their beliefs are such as what they eat or what they practice. It is important to learn as much about other cultures as possible to make the patients feel comfortable and to help them keep up with their traditions. This will aid in their health because they will be more acceptable to the nurse as well as more trusting.
Importance of Hand Washing

In our world today there are many ways to prevent patients from getting sick in the hospital. I believe that hand washing is the most important way to not spread virus, germs and infections to patients. Since nurses perform all nursing tasks using their hands, they are the part of the body that is going to get contaminated the most. When you touch patients you are transferring these germs to them which in some cases could make the patient’s condition worsen. If nurses remember to wash their hands, it is one less way that germs can be transmitted to patients. It is also important to know how to wash your hands properly otherwise all of the germs are not going to be killed and washed off. Washing your hands is an easy and reliable way to not spread germs that can be potentially harmful to patients. I believe that this task should be performed by every nurse after every activity to ensure cleanliness and the health of patients.

The following video explains the steps to follow in order to properly wash your hands
Nurse-Patient Relationships

There are many aspects of nursing that are important in the recovery and health of a patient. I believe one of the most important aspects is having a good nurse-client relationship. This means that the nurse and client have a good working relationship where the patient is comfortable being around the nurse and the nurse is easily able to promote health and recovery. This type of relationship is what helps the patient to develop trust towards the nurse. It also helps the health of a patient because the nurse is able to pick up on verbal and non verbal cues more easily. The patient will have a better health care experience if this kind of relationship is worked towards since they will have someone that they know cares for them and someone they can depend on. This kind of relationship should be worked towards by every health care professional to benefit each patient.
Technology and Nursing

Technology is a helpful tool in our health care society today. It is beneficial to nurses as well as patients to overcome communication barriers such as language differences, busy schedules and the understanding of nursing techniques. Translator’s help nurses communicate with a patient from a different language background. Technology such as charting on the computer makes nursing tasks faster since typing is quicker than writing information on paper. This allows more time to be spent with patients. Technology is also handy in explaining procedures. A patient can go home or use a laptop and look up information about their diagnosis which has explanations in great detail. Technology helps to overcome communication barriers between a nurse and client and is helpful in the health care system today.
Hello,

My name is Lindsey Bourque and I am 18 years old. I am currently attending the University of Ontario Institute of Technology working towards becoming a registered nurse (RN). Becoming a nurse has always been a dream of mine. My mother, Sherry works at Ajax Pickering Hospital and I love going to work with her. It gives me a chance to follow around real nurses and get to know the hospital. I think blogging is a wonderful way of getting all your thoughts in order and is a great way to inform others of experiences you are having as well as the ups and downs of becoming an RN. Overall I hope you enjoy reading my nursing blog and I am excited to start sharing all of my thoughts and experiences.
